Friends are friends forever!

Cami Jo Bunnell Oborn 5/2/1977 ~ 6/27/2011
Everyone's favorite, Cami Jo Bunnell Oborn, 34, passed away in a tragic rafting accident on June 27, 2011. Cami was born May 2, 1977 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mike and Toni Bunnell. Raised in a close knit, loving family who shared their lives and time together from childhood until the present day. Cami graduated from Brighton High School in 1995 surrounded by a group of incredible girls who remain her closest BFFs to this day. She met Thom just before her senior year and has loved him as her best friend, sweetheart and adoring husband ever since. Along with their two darling boys they have established a family unit to be admired and emulated. A dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cami has served in many capacities, blessing countless people with her steadfast testimony and faith in Jesus Christ. She especially loved serving in the Young Women's organization and cherished the strength and quality of the young women she dearly loved. Cami was naturally drawn to the medical field by her innate sense of serving others and her nurturing spirit. She graduated from Certified Careers Institute as a Medical Assistant in 2005 where she later returned to work as an instructor. Cami was currently working at the Utah Heart Clinic and After Hours Medical where she diligently rendered care to her patients who were blessed not only with her knowledge and exceptional skills but her true compassion as well. Cami loved the outdoors, appreciated nature and God's creations with a reverence that will never be forgotten. Her happiest times were those spent at Scofield and Green Valley Ranch surrounded by those she loved, revered and appreciated most, her family. Cami's legacy will live on through her precious boys. Her beautiful smile, contagious laugh and pure unconditional love for all will be reflected in their eyes and through their spirits as they always remember their mom who loved and adored them. Cami is survived by her husband, Thom Oborn, and two sons, Ashton and Duston. Parents: Mike and Toni Bunnell; sisters: Cindy (Scott) Warner, Chris (Jason) Halling; brother: Zach Bunnell; grandparents: Louis and Jo Bunnell; loving in-laws: Clark and Carolyn Oborn and Family, nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by Grandpa Leslie, Grandma Mary and Grandpa and Grandma Gregerson. A viewing will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive on Friday, July 1, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 2, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at the Brookwood Ward, 11970 South 1900 West in Riverton where family and friends may visit from 9:00-10:45 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Mountain View Memorial Estates, 3115 East 7800 South. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made on Ashton's and Duston's behalf at any Key Bank branch. The family would like to express sincere gratitude for family members, friends and rescue workers who risked their lives on Cami's behalf. "Cam Jo, we love you, we miss you and Babe you're our Firework!"

I still can't believe that any of this is real.  I became friends with Cami when I was 15 years old.  She was in my neighborhood/ward when I moved to Utah.  There were 5 of us(Jamie, Jessica, Cami, Lindsay, and Me) that became fast friends and stayed BFF's from 9th grade on.  Of course many other friends joined our group along the way, but we were a really close group of friends.  It didn't matter that some of us would have boyfriends, some of us got married young and started having kids....we were always BFF's and would get together several times throughout the year to spend time together.

(maybe sometimes we skipped school on Wednesdays and went to Brighton 4-for-1 skiing....shhhh, don't tell our parents!)

Seminary Graduation 1995
One thing Cami and I liked to do in high school was call each other and "watch TV" together. We wouldn't really talk to each other....just make comments here and there about the show we were watching. And as adults some of our most stimulating conversations were about "American Idol", "The Bachelor", "The Bachelorette", and "So You Think You Can Dance"....ya know, the important stuff.

Cami and I worked at Payless Drug together in High School.  If it weren't for Cami I probably wouldn't be married to Jason because in true Cami fashion, she FORCED him to ask me out (Jason also worked there, he was the "tree lot boy" during Christmas time).  We had good times stocking shelves together and singing "....that's what friends are for...." in our ugly gray smocks.

Later, Cami, Jessica, JoRae and I worked at CrossLand Mortgage.  We had a lot of good times there too.  How lucky for BFF's to work at the same place.  We got to see each other all day 5 days a week.  We got to go to lunch together everyday.  It was while we worked at CrossLand that Cami and I both got married.  Cami was the first of us to have a baby....sweet Ashton. We all loved and adored him. We couldn't wait to get together and see him, hold him, and gush over him.

Of course Cami was one of my Bridesmaids when I got married....

You can't really tell from this picture, but Cami tackled everyone to catch my bouquet.  She just so happened to be the next one of us to get married....

Many people have commented about this and it's true...Cami had the BEST memory.  She would bring up stories that happened 15 years ago and know the small minute details about how things happened.  We had so many laughs about the "good old days" and the dumb things we did as teenagers.

Cami had the most infectious laugh and a real zest for life.  She was always up for anything whether it be performing in a flash mob or dancing around on a strangers front porch with a nylon on her head....she was always laughing and having a good time.  I always wished that Cami would be surprised by Oprah or Ellen with something like a new car.  She would have been hilarious.  She would have been one of those people that make you laugh even though you don't know her.  I can't even tell you how much I miss her laugh.

You can't see really well here because it was dark outside, but the camera was on Cami most of the time.  You can hear her laughing and having a good time!  She told me after she did this flash mob that it was one of the funnest things she's ever done.

One quality that I really admired about her is that she never gossiped.  She never joined in the conversation if people were talking unkindly about others.  She never spoke badly about her husband, kids, or other family members when other people were.  She was a very loyal wife/daughter/sister/friend/cousin/aunt!

Her funeral was one of the hardest days I've ever had to endure.  Singing at her funeral was next to impossible, especially singing "Friends Are Friends Forever".

Saying our final goodbye
Jessica, Lindsay, JoRae, Me, Jamie

At the graveside Thom played one of Cami's newly discovered favorite artists/songs "In Case I Go Again" by Mikey Wax.  It was such a touching moment.

I'm grateful that I know I will see her again. I am also grateful for the best friends and family to help me get through this. I feel at peace that it was her time to go and that it was part of God's plan for her. Cami Jo, you will be missed more that you can imagine. I love you!

Nanci...my heart is just breaking...I didn't know your friend, but I am so sorry she has passed. If she was anything like you...she had to have been so much fun to be around. Hang in there and thanks for sharing those songs and your memories of her.

Color blind

Driving home from girls camp last year we had one of our cute young woman in the car, Kambri who was not feeling well. Sweet Cami offered to stop at McDonald's in Park City to get her a drink to hopefully help her feel better. After the drive thru we continued to talk about how Thom was color blind & I just could not fathom him not seeing colors the way I do?! She made a right turn out of the drive thru then made a quick u-turn. The guy driving behind us was noticeably upset & we could not figure out why! Cami gave herself plenty of time to make the u-turn, so why would he be so mad? So we just continued our conversation, Cami saying & looking in her rear view mirror, " See now Thom would not be able to see the color in that NO- U TURN sign! Aaaaha! We had figured out why the man behind us was so mad! We laughed so hard the entire drive home!

A younger prettier version of me

In the wake of our tragic loss I wanted to re-visit a blog post I wrote about Cami three years ago. One blessing that has come to light for me personally since my sweet sister was lost just over a week ago is that I have no regrets about our relationship as sisters. Cami knew I loved her, admired her and respected her. I told her these things on a regular basis. I encourage all to love and appreciate their family members; sisters, brothers, parents, children...life is fragile and can change in an instant. I pray that Cami's light and legacy will forever shine and that her incredible example will live on to touch, teach and influence all who were blessed to know her. I love you, Cam. People often say that my sister Cami and I have the same voice. We sound identical when we talk and especially when we laugh. I have noticed this phenomenon with other sisters, but it's hard to pick up on similarities when it involves yourself...

Four years ago Cami became a certified medical assistant. As a nurse myself I was thrilled to be joined in the health care field by my sister. She was interested in working in urgent care, so I inquired about a possible position for her with the company I work for. I spoke with the COO of our company about an employment opportunity, and his response was..."I would love to hire your sister--I welcome a younger, prettier version of you!" He had never even seen Cami...how did he know she was prettier than me?

I love working with Cami. She is smart, stable and responsible. She is my one and only source and sounding board for "office gossip." We have an unspoken rule of confidentiality and discuss everything from coworkers who have bizarre opinions and habits to doctors who wear scrub tops with their khakis. We adore (practically) every person we work with, but trust no one but each other...

Cami is the lone girl in her family as the proud mom of two cutie pie boys. Ashton, her oldest has been perfect since the day he was born. He is sweet and sensitive and absolutely charming. We thought Cam had met her match with her second son, Duston, but once he got through those tough toddler years he too seemed to show several obvious signs of perfection.
Cami is crazy in love with her husband who happens to be the strong, silent type. He is splendid at changing tires for his nutty sister in law, and is steadfast in his tolerance of wacky Bunnell sister antics.

Cam has had a few little trips and tumbles in her life, but all adversity that comes her way is confronted head on by her positive attitude and cheery smile... She laughs easily, though she can't scream worth a darn. Younger, prettier and much more AMAAAAAZING than I could ever hope to be...that's my sis!

I just went in my basement and practiced my scream, it's not very loud, so I don't know what Cami is talking about. Okay, so I am very teary eyed right now because you are talking about my most favorite cousin Cami. No words can describe how much I love that girl. She has been through her fair share of problems and trials, and seriously never complains. She is so Christ like and such a peace maker. She is an amazing person and I love her so much! I can't believe how much you guys look and talk alike, and also your gestures are the same. You two are both beautiful, kind, and thoughtful. Thanks for coming tonight, it was so good to see you. P.S. Jamie and Cindy both commented on how pretty you were tonight.

Dumpster Diving

Dear Amanda, I want you to know that I totally love you, and I don't judge you AT ALL for being a dumpster diver! Hahah! :).
That was the last facebook message I got from our sweet Cami! Now let me explain... It was our last young woman experience with her & we were setting up tents t make sure we had everything we needed for girls camp. I arrived late & the first thing I was told to do was throw away a tent because it had no poles. When I got back from the dumpster I noticed a bag of poles & pulled Cami aside, saying what if those poles go to the tent I just threw away?! So she agreed to coming with me to get the tent out (keep in mind that both Cami & I are total germaphobes & never without our hand sanitizer!) So we proceed to pull out MOST of the tent with no trouble, but some of the loose parts just happen to fall down to the very bottom. Cami also knowing many of my many quirks now knows that I don't give up easily, so I hop in the dumpster & get the rest of the tent. But now I am stuck! Cami asks me to give her one of my legs?! So I do & of course we laugh so hard we can't do anything else! I somehow got out, & come to find out it was all for nothing, the poles did not belong to that tent! I guess it wasn't for nothing, I have a great memory of my very best friend!
When she got home she texted me: "I am all showered and clean now! I felt so yucky! Now I have to blow dry my hair, go to bed!"
I love you my friend!
Amanda
I love you Cami

We lost a very special soul last night. Our cousin, Cami Jo Bunnell Oborn, was ...taken from us in a rafting accident. What a helluva person! She’s seriously one of the best people I’ve ever met, and she was truly taken away from here too soon. This thing we call life is just so damn unfair sometimes. I can’t even begin to imagine what her awesome husband and two boys are going through, having lost such a perfect mom and wife. I’m so sorry, guys. And Aunt Toni, Uncle Mike, Cindy, Chris and Zach, I don’t even know what to say to you guys. Please do everything you can to think of all the amazing times you had with such an incredible woman. Truly the best. She was so good to everybody and always made people feel comfortable. One of a kind, that Cami Jo. She is loved by sooo many, and she’ll never be forgotten. She changed lives with her awesome love. She was an example to everyone she was around. This is such a huge loss for so many of us, and I’m so sorry to those of you that were closest to her. Cami, thank you so much for being so good to my little sister. Best buds since birth! I’ll never forget how good you were to her and for her. I love you so very much!
I am deeply saddened by this news, Cami I'm so glad to have known you. You always had a smile every time I saw you, and so kind and thoughtful, and such a fun, and happy person to be around!
To Thom, Aston and Duston, I am so sorry about the loss of your Mom, and wife. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this hard time. My heart aches for all 3 of you right now.

Thom: I cant begin to understand... Please, please, take advantage of those of us that have our homes, ears, and arms wide open. Cami has always made sure her beautiful family was taken care of, and I have no doubt she'll continue to do so. Much love to you and your awesome boys.

This is really beautiful! and very touching. She was an awsome mother, I 'm sure Heavenly Father must have some very important work for her to do.

Cam..I know you would want to know all about the Bachelorette since we always had to discuss that first! So Bentley came back so that Ashley could get closure..he was a total jerk..as usual so he left! And now she feels like she can move on..drama drama drama! And we both know we love it! I love you so much and I am so so sad you are gone! I know you are in a better place but I will miss you every day! I will watch over "butthole" and the kids! I love you Cami!!
